I presume that referring to imaging devices 24 bits generally means 8 bits each for
each of 3 color channels, and NOT 24 bits on a single channel.  Imaging devices
which provide 10 or 12 bits per channel are not that uncommon.  I have at home an
old flatbed scanner from the mid 1990s which digitizes each color channel at
10 bits each, for a total of 30 bits.
