Art,
No crackling, unlike other neon signs. I have seen a
lot of aurora in my 60+ years on the planet but the
only sound I have ever heard was from my own mouth:
" Oh MY GOD !" That was in 1958 while setting up for
a Moonwatch session on the roof of Building D. It
was about 2 AM and there were rolling waves of red
curtains from the northern sky all the way to the
Southern horizon. I felt the hair on the back of my
neck stand on end.  It lasted about 20 minutes with
some color changes including what appeared to be
white.  
Because of the late hour, very few others observed
it. Another time I invoked the name of the Supreme
Being was when both main and reserve chutes
entangled.
I have noted that camera and eye see the colors
differently. I noted red, white, green, yellow, 
blue, and magenta at the Stellafane apparition.
