The CDC endorses DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535:

experience, Picaridin-based bug sprays are effective and a lot less
nasty than DEET. Cutter sells a line as "Cutter Advanced" at a
variety of concentrations.
Permethrin treatments for clothes have also worked well for me.
