[Atmob-discuss] Extremely thin Crescent Moon visible tonight

According to the February 2008 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine (pp.
72-73), tonight will present an opportunity for observers in NE North
America to see an exceptionally young Moon at sunset.

The New Moon occurred earlier today at 8:18 AM. According to my Starry Night
software, sunset occurs in Boston at 7:49 PM; at that instant the 11.5h-old
(!) Moon will be 6° 33’ above the W (azimuth 294°) horizon. Moonset is at
8:37 PM. The Clear Sky Clock forecast for Boston looks promising, so if you
have a good view low to the West after sunset, it might be worth trying for
your personal record of seeing the thinnest possible crescent Moon. (The
all-time world record is 11h 40 m past New Moon.)

And – oh yeah – a bit higher up, Mercury is a 60%-illuminated disk 7
arc-seconds in diameter, 17° above the horizon at sunset.

Enjoy!
