Hi,
I'm just putting out a feeler on this one.
On August 1st this summer, there will be a total solar eclipse visible from
Northern Asia. The Beijing Planetarium is planning an excursion to view the
event. Details are coming in slowly but I should know more by the time I
return from China later this month.
The latest news I have is that the planetarium will hire a train to take as
many as 1000 people to a viewing site. As I imagine this will be inside of
China, totality would be between 1.5 and 2 minutes. I'm pretty certain that
the train ride will not be very expensive, and nice western-style (Radisson,
Holiday Inn) hotels inside Beijing can be had for much less than $100/night.
My plans are to arrive around 7/22 and work for 5 days. The eclipse is
August 1, and I leave for home on August 3rd. I can take people on tours of
popular Beijing sites when I am free or I can hook you up with my employer's
excellent tour guides for about $50 - $100/day depending on destination.
A couple of people have already asked about this, and I'm willing to act as
facilitator to pull a group together. This is not the trip that Mario and
Bernie are putting together with Twilight Tours for the summer of 2009. But
like Mario and Bernie, I will profit only by having friends to share the
experience with.
Please reply privately if you have an interest.
