I do not want to steal Bernie's thunder at his accomplishment, Let him talk
about it tonight at the meeting.
In general though, the cost of replacement of inefficient Mercury lights is
low hanging fruit, as they are energy inefficient, especially as they age,
and... you can no longer legally buy the mercury lights in Mass. One of the
pieces of legislation I helped get passed a few years ago with the Mass Med
Society. That is now in effect this year, so another incentive to get rid of
them. (Also.. no more mercury glare bombs to be sold!). The pay back for
replacing HP Sodium (which is what is in effect in most localities, eg
Lynnfield) is quite a bit longer, about 4 years if lower wattage is used. In
fact no payback if the wattage is not cut down (which it should be by about
40%). So, quite a harder sell to municipalities. That is why the best
argument is to change over any new or replacement lighting. Cost is then
zero. (always an easy sell). Having said that, though no longer a Lynnfield
resident, if you can convince the town managers to listen to me again, happy
to give a presentation any time at a town meeting.
Hopefully Bernie can give us a report on his work tonight at the meeting,
Congrats to Bernie!
