The bright, almost starlike object is commonly called the nucleus, but in reality the real nucleus itself is obscured by gas and dust. A more correct term for it would be the inner coma or region of the nucleus. But it's pretty much accepted to call it the nucleus as most everyone knows what is being inferred.
