. and taken to its ultimate possible conclusion in Poul Anderson's "Tau
Zero", wherein a Bussard ramjet traverses the entire Universe (quite
believably!). With his passing and that of Dr. Robert L. Forward, two of
"hard" science fiction's greats will be gone.

The bussard ramjet approach to interstellar travel was popularized by Larry
Niven in the 70s and 80s series of 

Novels and books including "Ringworld".another neat idea.
