I probably shouldn't advise but I can't resist.  Plus other people who 
wouldn't have said anything will say "don't listen to George, do it this 
way..." so even if my advice is bad I'm helping.

I really like heat shrink tubing.  You buy it at an electronics store. 
Buy the special heat gun too.  It starts out about 5x larger diameter 
than final size.  Put it over the wires and slide out of the way. 
Solder as before, then slide tubing over the soldered section and shrink 
with the heat gun (hair dryers aren't hot enough).  It's stronger than 
electric tape, looks better, and lasts longer.  No gunk will slip out if 
it sits too long in the hot sun (like electric tape does).  The most 
popular color is matte black.
