[ATMoB-discuss] Tonight's Eclipse

Hi Kapil,
It's nice to hear someone saw the totality.   The color and darkness of
the eclipse is a result of how much dust is in our atmosphere.  I recall
a very deep orange-reddish eclipse that occurred after the 1991 eruption
of Mt. Pinatubo.  It put a lot "stuff" into the atmosphere.

I was in North Carolina today. The sky was clear here and I got an
excellent view of the total eclipse. When the moon rose above the tree
lined horizon, it was already past the totality. So I didn't get to see
the earth's shadow creeping up on moon. However, I did get to see the
coppery moon and it was awesome. I also got to see the moon coming out
of the eclipse. 

The coppery moon did set me thinking about why does it appear so. Does
any one know why does the moon appear in this specific color.
