Re: the WR Grace site, I also noted it had been bulldozed recently and topped with fresh gravel. There were some heated discussions as to what uses could go onto the site. It is still fenced off.
I can't answer directly about the grain alcohol at the liquor store but it is worth $12 for me to give it a try since I work in NH now. However, I vaguely remember (it was 50 years ago !) that the Proof was 240 - absolutely pure of water and full of energy. We use HPLC grade of Iso-Propyl Alcohol for space and critical military applications and Tachnical grade for general lens cleaning. It works very poorly on pitch and waxes. 30% Ammonia will also dissolve pitch but is too concentrated and dangerous for general use.
The citrus terpines work well on pitch, but many people get sick from the strong orange/lemon aroma.
