Paul (or anyone else in the know...)
Why Acetone, and not say Isopropyl Alcohol? In my youth, we cleaned fine
camera lenses with Kodak "lens cleaner" which near as I could tell was
mostly Isopropyl with a little bit of a surfactant. Is it because the
Acetone is known safe for the kinds of (AR?) coatings used on eyepieces? Or
that the Isopropyl you find at the chain drug stores is not pure enough?
I've always been impressed with Acetone's aggressiveness... It dissolves
"super glue", polyurethane glues and epoxy before cured, resins used in
solder (electronics), and I believe is a major constituent of nail polish
remover. It's also readily absorbed through the skin on contact, and can
carry materials dissolved in it into your body... Definitely worthy of
respect

Ross,
I would not recommend a beginner taking apart the EP, although that might be
the best solution.
If it is really sugar, just moisten a Q-Tip and gently swab a small area.
Filtered water preferred. Keep doing this a small area at a time start at
the edge, and then continue from the center and work a bit at a time to the
perimeter. I would not hesitate to use dozens to effect this preliminary
cleaning.
Don't soak the surface, it is bound to run the sticky mess in and around the
lens elements.
Finally, to complete the job, swabs or lens tissue dipped into acetone from
a hardware store ( CAREFUL- very flammable). If that doesn't do it see an
experienced optician at the clubhouse.
Paul
