Jeff,
Reports for last Tues. Jan 16, was that Comet McNaught was -3rd mag. and southeast of the sun at 20h 21m and dec.-30.8 deg. That places it very far south for our latitude, almost on the horizon. I do not have a Near-IR filter yet for 0.9 microns
(9000 Angstroms) so I tried a 25A deep red for 6500 A yesterday afternoon with a 100mm F/2 lens. Scanning the exposures yield nothing but lens ghosts. I suspect I should have used something like the Schupmann at a long EFL to quench the sky brightness.
The comet is heading due south at almost constant R.A.

Today it is at RA20h30m and Dec -36, and tomorrow at RA 20h35m and Dec.-38. This places it in the constellation of Microscopium. After today, you need to head for Argentina, Chile, or New Zealand !
