If you only look at one of Mario's pictures, look at this one:

At first you see a big mirror but then when your eye's settle on that tiny little Mario, you realize how damn big the thing is.  Look how thick the glass is in the center hole!  331 inches doesn't sound like much to me until I convert it to feet: 27.5 feet.
