Paul,
Yes, the Rebel XT is on the short list of candidates. The Canon image
processing software has an excellent rating among the SLR brands- perhaps
the best. Both the Rebel XT and the Zeiss D40 are about the same size and
price. The Rebel APS sensor has a bit more noise than the Zeiss D40 CCD,
according to http://www.dpreview.com/ , and the Zeiss got great ratings on
short "time delays" (time from "on" to "able to take picture"). However,
the Zeiss D40 doesn't have focus motors built into the camera body- its in
the lenses (and the kit lens isn't an autofocus lens).
So, everything is a compromise.
