Peter,
Thanks for researching this. Waterville was one of
my favorite ski areas, even the rope tow area.
Seeing stars in the wintertime was a pretty rare
event, however.
The AMC Cardigan Lodge in Alexandria was an even
better location for dark skies because there are
only a few small towns within miles. Bristol was the
largest, near I-93. This is about 20 miles west
of Mario's NH Obs. at Center Harbor and a real snow
bowl. Ed Jameson and I got stranded at the lodge
for several days one January after a major blizzard.
That's unlikely to happen at Waterville.
Paul

Observatory
Hello Peter,
I'd like to thank you for your expression of
interest in the Rey Center
observatory plans which our executive director,
Nat Scrimshaw, forwarded to me.
For several years we've presented astronomy
sessions on Saturday nights
here in Waterville
Valley. One
Saturday night a month an astronomer/educator from
the Christa McAuliffe
Planetarium presents a program at the Rey Center
and on two other Saturdays my wife and I put on a
program. As part of an
on-going capital campaign we will be building a
new facility which will include
an observatory. If all goes as planned we should
break ground next year
and complete phase I, which includes the
observatory, in 2009.
Our plans at present will have the observatory
adjacent to Packard's
field and, since we instituted an outdoor lighting
ordinance a few years ago,
we have pretty good sky conditions. We have not
made any specific plans
for equipment but I've been considering something
like a
14"-16" Ritchey-Chrétien although we might
initially use my
8" Schmidt. We anticipate feeding signals from a
CCD to the theater
in the Rey Center complex.
As we proceed in this process we'll be looking for
ideas and will
appreciate any suggestions you have.
You can find more information about the Rey Center
and plans for the new construction on our website:
