By coincidence, I happen to have just come across an article in the 
September 1998 Sky & Telescope, page 123, about aan unusual 
bicylinder design for a backyard observatory that combines some of 
the advantages of a dome with low cost and easy construction.  If you 
can get hold of the article, it may be of use.
