How about the Canon Digital Rebel 300D?  John mentioned this model in his email.  These are SLR and about half are selling under 
$400 on ebay (used of course).  This is a very sweet daytime camera and blows away those other cameras you discussed (if you later 
buy a zoom).  Most digital cameras - you hit the button and wait a second for the camera to take a picture - my daughter can run 
from one end of the room to the other end in that time.  But the 300D is very fast.  And takes several pics per second.  And is an 
SLR with changeable lenses.

There is a busy market for these on ebay with many sales and good deals every day.  If you are willing to use esnipe.com and willing 
to wait a week you should get one for under $400 with a lens and memory.
