Yes, I also remember my first total solar eclipse. It was 
televised from Manhattan with Dave Garroway as host.
That was 1952, the year before I joined ATMoB. Remeber that?

The club had many meetings at the planetarium to hear 
Director John Patterson speak of the progress on the Korkosz 
Projector, demos of the rising skyline, special effects like 
clouds, meteors, and auroras, sunrise, sunset,  but no stars! 
It was another few years before they added the planet 
projectors but faked it for a while with projected slides.
John was a member of the club for several years and had made 
a scope around 1950.
