On Sunday, January 6th at Waltham High School , the guest speaker for
the Photographic Historical Society of New England will be Dr. George
Champine, a member of that club and a volunteer working on the
Digital Access to a sky Century (DASCH), the project at the
Harvard-Smithsonian which is digitizing the glass plate collection.
Included in the glass plates are daguerreotypes dating from 1849, wet
collodion plate images primarily from the 1870's and early
stereoscopic and spectral plates. Dr. George Champine is a volunteer
working on the project, is a physicist and computer scientist now
retired, and "should be the perfect guide for a tour of the history
of astrophotography and its transition from analog to digital." The
meeting starts at 1:30 p.m. and is open to the public. For more
information on the DASCH project, read The New York Times article at
http://tdc-www.harvard.edu/plates/publications/GJ1NYT.pdf See
www.phsne.net/forum for more information about the club.
